Q: What is WJMS?
A: WJMS “Real Country” is Ironwood’s heritage radio station featuring classic country music and full-service programming. We’ve been serving Michigan’s western Upper Peninsula since November 3, 1931, making us one of the oldest radio stations in the region! We’re known as “Real Country for Real People From When Country Was Real Country!”
Q: What frequencies can I find WJMS on?
A: You can tune in to 590 AM or 92.1 FM on your radio dial. We also stream online at wjmsam.com, so you can listen from anywhere!
Q: Who owns WJMS now?
A: WJMS is now owned by Civic Media, a Wisconsin-based media company dedicated to providing quality hometown radio. Civic Media acquired WJMS from J&J Broadcasting in 2025 marking their expansion into Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The purchase was completed through the Michigan Civic Media Alliance, which is led by Civic Media with support from the Michigan Independent Media Group.
Q: What is WJMS’s history?
A: WJMS first began broadcasting on November 3, 1931 with 100 watts of power and was called “The Voice of the Iron Range.” For over 90 years, WJMS has been a trusted source of news, music, and community information for the Ironwood area and western Upper Peninsula. We’re proud to continue this legacy under Civic Media’s ownership.
Q: What kind of music do you play?
A: We play classic country music from the golden era when country was REAL country! Think George Jones, Merle Haggard, Loretta Lynn, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Dolly Parton, and all the legends that made country music great.
Q: What special programming do you air?
A: We feature several popular shows including “That Tom Guy” (Tom Peterson) weekday mornings from 6-10 am, who wakes everyone up with jokes, quick wit, and music history. We also air the legendary Deer Hunters Roundup every November 15-30, starting at 5:30 pm CST, a tradition that connects hunters and families across the region!
Q: Do you broadcast local sports?
A: Absolutely! Gary Giancola and Rod Halvorsen bring you live coverage of all area high school games right here on WJMS. Local sports is a big part of who we are and our commitment to the community!
Q: What is the Deer Hunters Roundup?
A: The Deer Hunters Roundup is a beloved tradition that runs November 15-30 every year, starting at 5:30 pm CST. Hunters can call in their deer kill reports and send messages to family and friends. To participate, call (906) 932-2411 or email [email protected] by 4 pm to be included in that evening’s show. It’s a unique Upper Peninsula tradition!
